A
Noted Composer/Pianist Returns to the
Well-Spring with his 2001 release
Going
Home
If you add up all the things that
you've done, begins Stu Goldberg, what you make
of them is a sum total. Goldberg's intertwining careers
-- as a recording artist, composer and musician -- are vividly
recounted in the distinguished artistry he reveals on his
2001 album, Going Home.
In an era of sterile, perfect recordings,
Going Home, recorded live
in his studio, presents a decidedly organic ensemble: Goldberg
on piano, his brother, Kenny, on saxes and flute, and the
rhythm section of Jeff Falkner and Dave Renick on bass and
drums, respectively. It's all about communication,
stresses Goldberg, player interaction.
At the resonant heart of the recording is
the title cut, a solo piano piece. It was a total improvisation,
Goldberg recounts, I just turned on the machine and
went for it -- one take, one thing, that's it. I have this
wonderful instrument in this amazing studio and I said, 'I
want to make music about what I'm feeling at this moment --
for myself, and for whoever wants to listen to it.'
Millions of people have already listened
to Stu Goldberg. Born in Malden, Massachusetts and raised
in Seattle, by age 17 he was a featured keyboard soloist at
the Monterey Jazz Festival. Soon he expanded into studio dates
and tours; a five year stint with John McLaughlin in the legendary
Mahavishnu Orchestra; with Al DiMeola, Freddie Hubbard, Wayne
Shorter, Billy Cobham, Jack Bruce, Larry Coryell, Alphonse
Mouzon, and other jazz luminaries. Goldberg toured Europe
as a soloist. He began recording for record labels including
MPS and Pausa and returned to Los Angeles to begin working
as a session musician, helping composers with orchestrations,
and building his recording studio.
Goldberg's film credits include performing
on scores by such esteemed composers as John Williams (for
whom he was a featured keyboardist on Indiana Jones and
the Last Crusade); Jerry Goldsmith, David Newman and Lalo
Schifrin. The composers who utilized his studio also provided
first-hand insight on the techniques of combining music and
picture. Working on a one-on-one basis -- just me and
the composer -- was an amazing education. I've seen two hundred
composers solve problems in different ways. The same applies
to jazz: there are so many ways to solve situations, resolve
a chord, finish a composition, structure a song. I feel fortunate
in having this education; I could never have learned this
in school.
Stu has used his precious knowledge to advance
his own rapidly accelerating career as a composer. His
film and TV scores have garnered awards and entertained audiences
worldwide. He has scored feature films, television movies,
dramatic episodes, documentaries and animated series. His
music has been heard in an entry at the Cannes Film Festival,
in a Peabody-winning television series, and he was presented
with a 1999 CINE Golden Eagle Award and two consecutive BMI
Composer Awards. Currently, hes composing for the CBS
primetime series, The Amazing Race, Jerry
Bruckheimer Films/ Touchstone/ CBS/ Bertram Van Munster, producers.
Meanwhile, his Stu Goldberg Studios, with a 30-man capacity
tracking room and advanced post-production facilities, hosts
film and television sessions and recording artists.
Now, Stu Goldberg has arrived at another
crossroads, but there is a signpost that points him to one
familiar destination. Going Home
is more than a title; it is the perfect metaphor for his continuing
career evolution. Though it is a new work, it is a testament
to Goldberg's venerable history, vital present and illustrious
future; a milestone recording that resonates with the power
of pure inspiration. Going Home
reflects going back to what I feel I was put on this planet
to do, Stu Goldberg confirms, which is to play
the piano and write my own music.
